Principal models and theories of social transformation applied to examples of societal change. Topics may include consideration of master trends such as rationalization, industrialization, and bureaucratization, and the expansion and contraction of global interconnectedness. (3-0) 3 hours credit.

Community Development

The class will complete a Community Needs and Assets Assessment of a San Antonio neighborhood. Students will acquire skills in interviewing, community organizing, data mining and research. Readings will be assigned to give students a background in community, organizational and development theory as well as research methods. No previous experience in sociological research methods required.
Social Problems
Professor: Claudia Scholz

An examination of major contemporary social problems and their causes and consequences. Topics may include poverty, racism, sexism, deviance and crime, drug and alcohol dependence, the urban crisis, overpopulation, and war. 3 hours credit.

Internet & Society
Professor: Claudia Scholz
This course examines changes in society associated with new communications technologies.  Sociological topics addressed include social networks, work & occupations, social movements, social stratification, crime and power.
